Australia 2017 - Day 51 – 14th April

Day 51

Woke up to the smell of James cooking bacon on the barbeque.

It was a perfect start to the day, after which we caught the train from Subiaco to Perth, not far and then strolled through the city centre towards the waterfront at  Elibabeth Quay.

Perth’s riverfront was once a place for picnics and paddling, with public baths along the water’s edge. As the city grew, new development cut off the connection between the river and the city, culminating in 1940 when Riverside Drive was built. The continually evolving Elizabeth Quay brings the river and the city together again, creating new recreational opportunities for Perth locals and visitors.

We saw a dolphin swim across in front of us while we were waiting for our boat. Then it was time to board for our trip to Freemantle

We enjoyed a beautiful 90 minute Swan River cruise from here to Fremantle onboard a Captain Cook cruise boat. We experienced some of Western Australia’s exceptionally unique landscape and rich history. We discovered that Freemantle is full of maritime history. It is a bustling port with rich street culture and historic 19th Century architecture and landmarks.

The Black Swan, the Perth Symbol

We gradually made our way through the streets and along the front until we came to the Little Creatures Brewery where we stopped and had lunch in the Little Creatures Next Door loft restaurant.  Along with copious amounts of food we also sampled 12 of the beers brewed on the premises.  Terrific afternoon spent here.

Then, when we were finished, we set off for the railway station and final leg of our journey Subiaco by train. But on the way we came across a Jazz band in the street so we hung around for a bit lomger.
