Australia 2017 - Day 13 - 7th March

Day 13

Another wet start to the day so I decided to go into Chatswood today to watch the film 'Hidden Figures' in Hoytes Cinema in the Westfield Centre.

Chatswood

Chatswood is a major business and residential district in the Lower North Shore of Sydney. It is approximately 6 miles north of Sydney CBD and is the administrative centre of the local overnment area of the city of Willoughby.
It was named after Charlotte Harnett, wife of then Mayor of Willoughby and a pioneer of the district, Richard Harnett, and the original "wooded" nature of the area. The name derives from her nickname "Chattie"and was shortened from Chattie's Wood to Chatswood in the 1870s
Residential settlement of Chatswood began in 1876 and grew with the installation of the North Shore railway line in 1890 and also increased with the opening of the Harbour Bridge in 1932.
It was declared a town centre in 1983 and a city in 1989.

Westfield Chatswood

Westfield Chatswood is a large shopping centre in the suburb of Chatswood on Sydney's North Shore. It opened on January 30, 1986 and is the second major shopping centre to be built in Chatswood with the first being Chatswood Chase in 1983. In 1999 it was redeveloped to incorporate a previously free standing store and a more stores were added.

There have been a few incidents since the store opened involving attempted suicide. On 24th September 2005, a 32-year-old woman fell from the sixth floor and straight onto a 42-year-old woman on the ground floor in an attempted suicide. Both women were taken to hospital with major injuries but both survived.

On12th January 2016, A man fell from the fifth level and died. Police had been called to the centre following reports a man was standing on the wrong side of a railing. Police believed it was suicide.

Hoyts Cinema

Hoyts Cinema is found on the sixth floor of the Mall You buy your ticket on the 5th floor auditorium and take the escalators up to the floor above for the different screens. The Mall boasts some excellent food halls on the floors below so you can have something other than pop corn and fizzy drink to eat before or after the movies, although I can't watch a movie without my M&Ms.

The leather reclining seats are standard for all of the screens and it is a really comfortable way to watch a movie.

Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson - brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

I found it incredible that although I lived through the space race between the USA and Russia I knew nothing about this story. I am sure it was glamourised in some way to suit a cinema audience, but you cannot hide the fact that these three women's story should have been known to all long before we discover it in a movie.

A great film starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae as well as Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and my favourite from the Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons.
