Sweden & Oresund Bridge - Day 1 - November 19th

Day 1

Well its preparation day today and Kevin and I are getting ready to leave early tomorrow morning.

Our itinerary is as follows: -

Sunday 20th
I will pick up Kevin at his house and we will be driving from Newport to Newcastle where we will catch the overnight ferry to Amsterdam

Monday 21st
After arriving in Amsterdam around 9.00am on Monday we will set off to motor through the Netherlands and then up through northern Germany towards Denmark. We will be spending the first night in the Hotel Heidenauer Hof in Heidenau near Hamburg.

Tuesday 22nd
After breakfast we will leave Heidenau and cross the border into Denmark and drive right through until we reach Copenhagen.

En route we will cross the Storebael, or Great Belt bridge, an 18 km long fixed link bridge across the Storebaelt which actually comprise two bridges and a tunnel.

The Great Belt Bridge

When we reach Copenhagen we will then cross the Oresund strait on the Oresund bridge which joins Denmark with Sweden.  Not only does the bridge connect two countries, it carries trains and has four lanes for cars and other vehicles.

It is made up of three significant sections beginning with an underwater 4km tunnel from Denmark under the Oresund strait.  Once the tunnel emerges from the water it becomes a motorway racing along a man made Island called Peberholm for another 4 km. The third and final part is a cable supported bridge which carries road and railway tracks over the Oresund Strait for a further 8 km before eventually arriving in Malmo in Sweden..
