European Adventure 2019 - Transporter Bridges - Day 9

Day 9

Orleans to Rochefort via Vouzailles

Today we left Orleans and took a drive to Rochefort on the Atlantic coast of France.  We decided to leave the motorways behind us and drove the whole way on the minor roads of France.

It was a very pleasant journey, despite some rain along the way and we drove through some very picturesque villages and towns alongside the River Loire

En-route we had decided to detour to a little village in Poitou Charente called Vouzailles.  A quiet, old fashioned village that I had last visited over 30 years ago.  It had been the scene of many summer holidays enjoyed with family and friends and it was quite nostalgic returning after so long.

It was like stepping back in time.  Apart from the small shop that we used to frequent being replaced with a larger store and unfortunately, the village cafe/bar no longer open, nothing else had changed.  It was as though I had been here only a few months ago.

After staying here for a short while we moved on to a Plan D'eau that had been a particular favourite of hours where we used to spend hours swimming and playing in the water.  Unlike Vouzaille, this had changed dramatically and the beach and little cafe had disappeared and it was now used just for fishing.  Still picturesque, but it had lost that feeling of fun that it always held for us.  It is now known as the Lake of Fleix.

Ayron as we remember it and below as it is today.

We then continued our journey to Rochefort which after all was the main focus of our journey and first impressions as we drove in were excellent.  We booked into our hotel, The Rempart which was built adjacent to the old town wall, before enjoying an evening meal  in the nearby port.

Tomorrow we will see more as well as visiting the local transporter bridge.
